Heroic Train Staff Member Receives Critical Injuries During Multiple Knife Attack on Express Train
A courageous train employee who stepped in to save travelers during a mass knife attack on a express train has sustained critical wounds, authorities stated on Sunday.
Particulars of the Frightening Event
CCTV video reportedly depicts the employee trying to halt the assailant as the train traveled between Peterborough and Huntingdon in the county. Witnesses described a terrifying 14-minute period after the train left Peterborough, with injured passengers fleeing through compartments.
The individual, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, is in custody for questioning. Police declared a major event on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in central London.
Emergency Response and Consequences
The event on the weekend resulted in 11 people being treated in medical facilities after the train made an unplanned stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Five people have since been released from hospital.
A bystander filmed the individual brandishing a large knife and being shot with a Taser as he confronted officers on the platform. He was reportedly heard shouting, "End my life, end my life."
“This terrible incident has affected many people. We are thinking of the victims and their families – especially the courageous member of rail staff whose relatives are being assisted by trained personnel,” said a senior law enforcement official.
Union Reaction and Appeals for Action
Train associations were quick to commend employees and demand increased action. A union leader stated he would be “seeking immediate discussions with authorities, rail employers and police to guarantee that we have the strongest available assistance, resources and robust procedures in place”.
Another association leader encouraged the train operator and authorities “to act swiftly to examine security, to support the impacted workers, and to ensure that no incident like this occurs again”.
Driver Praised for Quick Action
The operator who stopped the service at Huntingdon was reported as being “very shaken” but “well”, and has been commended by association officials for doing “exactly the right thing”.
“He did not stop the service in the center of two stops where it’s clearly challenging for the first responders to reach, but he continued going until he got to Huntingdon, where the response was pretty much waiting,” explained a association official.
Additional Details
Authorities said they got the initial emergency reports at 7:39 pm, and the service was forced to make an unscheduled stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.
One observer recounted at first thinking if the event was a holiday joke, but soon realized from people's faces that it was real.
Authorities have stated there is nothing to suggest the event was a terrorist attack and have asked the public to provide with any additional information.
Train operations on the affected route are expected to have delays until Monday, with travelers advised to defer their travel where possible.
